As I sit in my sunroom this evening, I am surrounded by windows and see the flickering of little fireflies in the trees. I wonder if they are watching me as I watch them. They bring to mind memories of my childhood, visiting my aunt and uncle who lived on a tobacco farm in a very old farmhouse, where we took baths in a washtub on the porch in the summer and by the kitchen stove in the winter. Where "free range" applied to barefoot children as well as the chickens those children chased. The fireflies were everywhere. I think about visiting my grandmother on school breaks, sleeping on her "sleeping porch" with the "lightning bugs" zipping in and out among the beautifully creepy apple trees at night. I would lay awake imagining all sorts of things wandering around in the dark, among the trees. God forbid one of those tree branches should brush against the windows!
Memories. Sweet ones. When you hear a song on the radio, you are transported back to the dance that resulted in your first kiss on the way home. Another song brings back memories of when your heart was broken and you just kept listening to his favorite song over and over, like pouring salt into a wound but you would hit replay anyway. The night your husband proposed, a favorite song was playing. You smell gardenias and it reminds you of the perfume your mom always wore. You can't put those things in a binder and pull them out whenever you want to take a walk down memory lane. You can't bundle those up and share them with your children at a moment's notice, so they know the story that makes you who you are. You can't bundle up the things that bring back the memories of your children growing up with you...but you can put pictures and other mementos in a binder that will remind you of all those things. And those times.
